In 2010 the AGM of the Bristol Record Society resolved that we should permit Google to make available certain past volumes on 'full view' via their Google Books service. Such books had already been scanned but were, at that time, only available on 'snippet view'. It was understood that Google would neither charge viewers nor pay the Society for accessing our works. All of the affected volumes would thus be accessible, free of charge, worldwide.

The Bristol Record Society took this step because it recognised that allowing our volumes to be made freely available would be a great benefit to those researching Bristol's history. This would enable us to better fulfil our core function, which is to make the records of Bristol's history available to as wide a number of people as possible. We noted that none of our editors has ever received any royalty or fee for publishing with us – all having agreed to have their volumes published on a pro bono basis. Given the nature of our past and present relationship with our editors, we maintainthat we retain the right to act on their behalf to permit the reproduction of our existing titles, so long it is within the spirit of our original agreement.

While we made attempts to contact our former editors individually, in many cases this has proved impossible. For many of our editors have long since died and we have no knowledge of who the copyright holders might now be. In autumn 2010 we thus issued a number of notices of our plans, asking that 'If any copyright holder objects to our making a particular volume available electronically as proposed, we would ask them to get in touch with the Secretary of the Society by March 31st 2011'. These notices were placed on this website, other websites and in relevant publications, such as the Regional Historian. The only responses we received from authors / copyright holders were supportive of our plans.
