Welcome to University!

Dear all,

Assalaamu A'laikum Warahmatu Allahi Wabarakatuh (Peace Be Upon You)

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all on behalf of the Islamic society (ISoc) to the University of Bristol.

So, what's the Islamic Society all about, I hear you ask? Well, the ISoc organises a variety of activities ranging from educational and inspirational talks, to sporting events. We hope to deliver to our members a good mix of activities for both the spirit and the body. Therefore, as a member, you are guaranteed to find something just for you!

Last year's successes included the Islamic Awareness Week which won the best campaign at the University. This was a jam-packed week of talks, stalls, dinner and much much more. This year we will expand and make this bigger, inshaa'Allah, by bringing in more activities, including more Islamic Exhibitions and talks.

Thanks to Allah, we have a segregated prayer room in the Wills Memorial Building and also succeeded in launching the Halaal food section in the union shop and Halaal cooked food Fridays at Café Zuma. Also look out for our termly newsletters.

Now that the holy month of Ramadan is upon us we invite everybody, sisters and brothers, Muslims and non-Muslims, to the daily (including weekends) Iftars and Taraweeh prayers at the Grammar School. Please come along, this is especially done for you!

The Islamic Society is always keen to cooperate with other societies (e.g. Drama, Fair Trade) and we regularly take part in activities with other faith groups and the Chaplaincy.

The special thing about our society is the diverse backgrounds of its members; from the North Africans to South East Asians, and East Africans to Europeans. The Almighty Allah states in the Glorious Qur'ân Surat Al-Hujurat [The Chambers] 49:13: «Oh mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other (not that you may despise each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the Sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. In addition, Allah has full Knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)».

Most importantly as a member, we are always here to listen to you, whether you have suggestions, ideas, or if we can help you with anything, whether social, academic, or personal related.

All that is left for me to say is that we look forward to seeing you at the next ISoc event!

May Allah bless you and give you success in your studies.
