20th November 2006

Congratulations to everyone who took part at the Nationals, once again we came out on top with Mike taking 2 golds and Kiera claiming a silver! This was followed by a great night out in Birmingham, all in all a good weekend. Hope to see people training hard until the holidays and hopefully we'll do even better next time! Photos and videos coming soon so watch this space!

20th March 2006

Once again it's time for more congratulations - well done to all those who partook in Saturday's grading! It's great to see that everyone's hard work at training this term (and beyond) paid off, with new belts being awarded all round.  The mat will again be much more colourful as a result - and not just because of bruises!
Hope everyone has a good few weeks over Easter and that you'll return refreshed and ready to enjoy the summer term - don't forget, jitsu provides the perfect escape from exam stress!

13th March 2006

An awesome weekend had by all at the Judo Nationals! Once again Bristol came home with a spectacular array of shiny medals. Special congratulations go to Chris who got gold in both his competitions and Charlotte who also won gold. Other excellent medallists were Maryja (silver & bronze), Will Hinde (silver), Keira (Silver), Hannah (Silver) and Elly (bronze). Bristol uni club came second overall which is a great achievement, and I'm sure we'll beat UCL one day, and if not we might just have to steel their trophy in true Bristol spirit! Good Luck to all those going to the grading this weekend.

24th November 2005

Well it's been a busy first half term that's for sure; we've had a very successful regional at UWE, the Atemi Nationals and our demo all within the last few weeks.  Needless to say Bristol Uni jitsuka performed admirably at all three!  Well done to everyone who came to Birmingham for the nationals - it was a great weekend both on and off the mat.  The competitions saw many excellent performances, with the club getting 10 people through to the final rounds on Sunday.  Special congratulations should go to Tom who won silver in the orange belt category and also to Tony who came 4th in the purple belts.  Also, well done and thanks to everyone who took part in the university's martial arts demo last week - as usual jitsu was shown to be a great club to be part of, we rocked!
Keep checking the site for photographic / video evidence of all the above events and remember, keep going everyone, the grading is fast approaching....;-)

16th October 2005

Welcome to all the new members and all the oldies who have trained and been to the pub over the past week. We hope you had a wicked holiday and your jitsu is not too rusty! Don't worry if you missed the first few sessions, beginners are always welcome throughout the term. See the session times page to find out when we train.

A date for everyone's diaries is the Atemi Nationals on the 12th/13th of November. The event is in Birmingham, and from what I can remember is a fun filled weekend both on and off the mat! Speak to Nick to find out how to book your place. See you in the pub! Hannah

27th June 2005

Well, that's it folks, another year of jitsu has flown by and the long summer break lies ahead of us. Before we get too emotional though, a few more congratulations need to be said. Firstly, well done to all those who took the summer grading and were rewarded with new belts to add to their ever growing collections! It's great to see how so many of you have progressed over the year.
Secondly, congratulations go to those who were awarded University Colours and Half Colours at the AU Dinner. Our club members' efforts and achievements were recognised well this year with Half Colours going to Nick, Chris Walmsley, Sally, Gemima and me (Jo). Full Colours were also rightfully awarded to Kate. Well done to all!
The successes keep coming though - Chris Washington and Kate both passed their brown belt grading last weekend (on one of the hottest days of the year)! Getting to brown is a fantastic achievement and the whole club should be extremely proud of both of them. A massive well done guys!!
Finally, I hope that everyone had a great time in France last week. The weather was on or side this year and a lot of fun was definately had (nearly as much as beer was drunk!).
Don't forget that our club will only be training on Saturdays over the summer. Check out the Foundation website for further details of other clubs nearer to home or, for those of you still around, in Bristol. Good luck to all those graduating, and to the rest of you - keep up the good work next year! Jo

21st March 2005

The spring term ended with yesterday's grading at UWE and as usual Bristol Uni club met all expectations with lots of new grades being awarded. Well done to everyone who went! The mat will certainly be a lot more colourful after the holidays!
Term starts again on the 18th April and training will begin with it. If you can't wait that long there are links on our website and that of The Foundation to clubs that will continue training over Easter both here in Bristol and elsewhere. Take a look! So, until next time, happy holidays everyone! Jo

7th March 2005

Wow!! What a great weekend! The club had a hugely successful Judo nationals with medals a plenty being handed out and absolutely everyone doing themselves and the club proud in their respective competitions. Special congratulations go to Chris (Hunch) who got gold and silver medals and Nick who won a silver medal fighting in the blue belt category. Other excellent medalists were Sally (silver), Maryja (silver), Becky (bronze), Gemima (bronze) and Keira (bronze). Many of the fights were very evenly matched and Andy, Maryja, Nick and I narrowly missed out on more top three rankings but earned the club points by coming 4th. Everyone who came showed the true Bristol spirit of dogged determination and good sportsmanship - very well done guys!
Finally, a massive well done goes to Sensei George for getting her Senior Primary this weekend too, a great achievement! Jo

13th December 2004

Special congratulations go to Jo and Stella who graded away from home at Plymouth on Sunday. We now have a new mean green and an orange. Well done guys!!! Sal.

10th December 2004

A massive well done to everyone who went to the grading on Saturday. It was one of the longest and most exhausting many people (including instructors!) have seen so it was great to see so many shiny new belts being handed out afterwards. Congratulations to everyone who passed.
Also, thanks to everyone who came to the Christmas meal on Monday. Again it was a fantastic night with plenty of wine consumed and fun had by all.
Finally, a reminder that the club won't be training over the Christmas holidays so be prepared - everything you eat you'll have to work off on the mat in the new year! Have a great time and Happy Christmas!! Jo

17th November 2004

Well done to everyone who came to the Nationals this weekend, it was a great event with a massive turnout. I hope you all had a good time both on and off the mat and that you learnt a lot from the experience (even if it was that training whilst severely hungover and sleep deprived makes things a whole lot more difficult!).
Special congratulations should go to Claire who won bronze in the purple belt competition and also to Gemima and Sally for reaching their respective finals. Everyone (even those who did not reach the finals) did the club proud, well done guys! Photos should be up soon - keep checking! Jo

3rd October 2004

Firstly, welcome to all the new members who signed up at Fresh and everyone who came to the first session on saturday. Also, welcome back to all the grades, we hope you had a good holiday and are refreshed and ready for some hard work and training this term. Congratulations to Scott who was given his hakama on saturday - we know you'll be a great instructor!
For anyone who missed the first session, beginners are always welcome throughout the term. See the session times page to find out when we train.

26th June 2004

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the grading, especially to Chris W, Kate, Elly and Martin for getting their dark blue belts and Ai, who was the best green belt at the grading.
I hope everyone enjoyed the France trip and you aren't all having nightmares about green stuff and funnels...no, just me then!
Don't forget to keep up the training either here, in Bristol, or at your local club. Have a great summer and I'll see you all in October!

21st March 2004

Well done to everyone who graded yesterday, and who partied hard in the Cooler last night. It was a long and tiring grading, and everyone should be really proud of themselves for getting through it and putting in so much effort in the dojo during this past term. If you've not had enough Jitsu then there are ample opportunities for training over Easter. Our club will be training on Saturdays, but not in the week. During the week you have the option of the Town club or the Jacobs Wells club. For training times etc. check out the links section.

11th March 2004

Well done to everyone who went to the nationals, it was yet another great weekend and the club should be very proud of its fourth place finish. Specific congratulations go to Chris W (2 Gold medals) and Nathan (1 Gold and 1 silver). The other medal winners were ginger Chris (silver), Tarik (silver), Ai (silver), Me (silver) and Ros (bronze in the heavyweight category!). I'll get some photos up on the web as soon as they get developed. Chris

13th January 2004

Welcome back! I hope everybody had a great Christmas and New Year and are looking forward to more training this term. If you have never done Jitsu or any martial art, then this is a great time to come down and see what is involved. Chris.

22nd December 2003

Huge congratulations to Bob and Jon for both getting their brown belts last week. From the sound of it the grading was a bit of a nightmare, with a 70% faliure rate, so they both did extremely well. Training will probably start on sat 10th jan at 1, this is the saturday before term starts. If anyone is around in Brisol before this then they can train over at the town club. Merry Christmas everyone and I hope your holidays are going well. Chris.

10th December 2003

Congratulations to everybody who graded. It was a great day with belts a-plenty being handed out. In the novice category special mention should go to Ollie Hainsworth who was awarded top yellow belt for the region. Les and Ros received purple belts, whilst 'Hands Up' Chris was rightly awarded an Orange belt. Well done to Kate, Chris and Elly; they have ceased to be fantastic purple belts and are now fantastic light blue belts. Good luck to Bob for the Brown belt grading this Sunday and Merry Christmas to all! Chris.

17th November 2003

Wow what a weekend! Well done to everyone who went to the nationals, the club came SECOND in the country due to some great individual performances. Congratulations to sensei Phil Mortimore for winning the open competition in style and also to Jon and Bob for getting silver and bronze respectively in the dark blue belt competition. All novices did themselves proud with nearly half getting through to the second phase. Ai and George made it to the grand final and were robbed not to win medals. Photos will be up on the web soon, and maybe some videos. Chris

22nd October 2003

It's not too late to start Jitsu! Beginners are welcome to come along to any session. Those who have been training for a while will know that the Atemi Nationals is on the 15th/16th of November, up in Birmngham. Any grade will tell you what a fantastic event this is, a whole weekend of Jitsu related fun. Speak to Chris W after any session to book your place. See you on the mat. Chris.

24th September 2003

Welcome back! I hope that everyone is rested and ready for some tough training this term. Anyone thinking about starting Jitsu should come down and see us at FRESH and also check out the Canadian Jitsu Club Movies Page. Many of the techniques shown there are ones which new starters will be able to do after just a few months of training. See you on the mat. Chris.

20th June 2003

There will be a regional course on Saturday the 26th of July in the Bristol University Student Union room MR5a from 2pm-5pm. This course will be a great chance to catch up and is taken by our own Sensei John Hamer. Also congratulations to the Jitsuka who won half colours from the Athletic Union (Bob, Me, Kate and Elly) and particularly to Chris W for getting full colours (click for picture). Chris.

15th June 2003

Congratulations to Chris S, Lisa, Les, Bob and me for all grading on Saturday, it was as Johno put it “two and a half hours of psychological torture”, with a bit of jitsu thrown in for good measure. That’s it for training at the club till October, anyone still keen should check out Bristol Town or go to the Jitsu Foundation Website to find their nearest club. I’ve added even more photos to the socials section, including some of France 2002. If I don't see you in France 2003, then have a great summer!! Chris.

12th June 2003

Another year of jitsu draws to a close with only the grading on Saturday to look forward to. Training will start again in the new term. I hope everybody had a great time on Tuesday night at the Karaoke bar, photos will soon be uploaded to the socials section. The website is now under the captains control, so updates will be more regular and the site will become a more important as a source of information. I've got loads of photos which will be going up over the next few weeks so keep checking. Chris

7th February 2003

Training after christmas is now well under way, and everyone is beginning to work off all those mince pies! Congratulations to all those who graded before christmas (Scott, Chris, Bob, Eley, Chris, Kate, Les and anyone else I've forgotten to mention) - we were with you in spirit, honest. Anyone who wants to follow their example and grade at Easter, get yourselves down to the dojo on Tuesdays (6.30-8.00) and Thursdays (6.00-8.00), and for those of you who want to work off those Friday night hangovers, Saturdays from 1.00pm.

The martial arts demo is fast approaching, and we need as many people as possible to make us look better than everyone else, so get training!!!

Thats all for now, enjoy the term and watch this space for training time updates (once the sports centre get themselves sorted out).

10th October 2002

Welcome back! Hope you all had a good summer and hello to all the new freshers we've managed to recruit. Firstly, as most of you have heard, we have a new instructor! Sensei John Hamer will be taking over the club this term in our new dojo in the sports centre. Many thanks to Paul Conkie who has dedicated a lot of time to the club over the last few years and we wish him well in his new job.
Last but not least, a big well done to Mark who got his dark blue belt this summer. We knew you could do it!

8th March 2002

Well done to everyone at the nationals. Chris Washington did brilliantly and succeeded in winning a Gold medal in the gatame waza in the yellow belt category. I (Ros) also got a Gold in the nage waza and a Bronze in the gatame waza in the orange/green belt category.

On the social front, after a very successful School Girls Night and a rather drunken Ladies and Gents Night, I have updated the quotes page accordingly. Sam will soon have a page all to herself if she keeps this up - you really should learn to think before you speak, Sam!

Finally, good luck to everyone in the forthcoming grading. Check out The Grading Survival Guide from PlanetJitsu.com

14th January 2002

Hope you all had a good Christmas and are ready to train off all those mince pies!

First, well done to all our new novices for surviving their first term of Jitsu and congratulations to those who got their yellow belt at the end of last term. Congratulations to all the higher grades who got through the grading and a big well done to Chris for passing his brown belt grading.

30th November 2001

Congratulations to Martin for firstly getting his brown belt at the end of last term and secondly for getting his hakama and good luck at UWE. Congratulations to Mark for passing his Light Blue at the end of the summer and to Harry and Sam K who got their green belts.

Well done to everyone who took part in the Nationals. Well done to everyone through to their various finals, especially to Jon who won silver in the light blue category, and I think we safely secured the "Loudest and Most Drunk Club at the Nightclub" award for yet another year running!

15th May 2001

Judo Nationals - wow, Bristol actually won some medals! Congrats to all the yellow who won medals and also the higher grades - Jo P (gold), Chris P (bronze), Jay (2 bronze), Greig (gold and silver) and Martin (2 silver).

Also a big well done to all those who passed their spring grading, especially Dave! Doesn't that belt feel good? ;)

27th February 2001

OK, been a while since the last lot of so here we go... Well done Bristol Uni for coming second in November's Atemi Nationals - I know we didn't win but at least we still outdrank everyone! A special pat on the back goes to all the medal winners: Chris Gregory (Gold, Light Blue), Paul Conkie (Silver, Brown), Greig Sharman (Silver, Purple) and Ollie Garrod (Bronze, Dark Blue).

Congratulations to all those of you who stuck with it and got through the novice grading. See, we told you it wasn't really that bad! And also congratulations to the higher grades who took slightly more of a battering, especially Ollie for passing his Brown Belt grading.

This term has seen a change of club instructor. Many thanks to Sensei Tim for all the hard work he has put in for club, although I'm sure we definitely haven't seen the last of him! The club is now is the safe hands of Sensei Paul Conkie, who we're sure will do a fantastic job as his replacement.

It is also now the time of year when new blood takes over from old and a new committee steps in to run the club. If you think you would be interested in taking over from any current member of the committee then please let them know.

On the website front, there has now been quite a large update, especially where the photos are concerned!! Check out the socials section to see more and please keep them coming in!
