The Swimming Teams
The swimming team caters for all types of swimmers, from international swimmers, county or school standard, and even those who wish to swim for fitness and enjoy the social side of the team. For each of the sessions the ability of the team is spread across the six lane pool, which can be adjusted between 25m and 33m. The team is made up of students from all different backgrounds all of which take a variety of subjects - so joining the team will provide a fantastic chance to meet new people at university!
Coaching
The training is well organised with the evening sessions taken by the coach
Mike Shortman, a Bristolian with a heart of gold who has been with the club for years.
The morning sessions are aimed more at the competitive swimmers at the club,
and are run by Penny Porter, a former British record holder in the 50m Fly. Training
No one is pressured to do anything they do not want to do in the swimming
team and at the club in general. It is totally down to the individual how often
they swim, however if you are a competitive swimmer and want to be considered
for the BUCS events, ideally you should be attending at least three swimming
sessions a week. Competitions
The most important events in the swimming team's calendar are the BUCS events
that are spread throughout the year (check fixtures). For the BUCS team event
the swimming team enters both a first and second team - so there is plenty of opportunity to
represent the university within the team. Furthermore, the team tries to encourage
as many competitive swimmers as possible to enter the short and long course BUCS
events at Sheffield. Where possible, the team tries to enter as many university galas as it can.
In the past the team has entered the Exeter and Southampton Varsity galas as well
as holding its own galas at the Union pool. Socials Socials at UBSPWC are
held fortnightly on a Wednesday. This is a chance for Swimmers and Water polo players
to get to know each other outside of the swimming pool. The swimming team has a
good social scene, with plenty of good spirited banter on our weekends away at the
BUCS competitions and local varsity galas. Recent Performances
The Swimming team has developed tremendously within recent years, emphasised by
their consistent top performances at the BUCS events and their consecutive winning
of the Exeter Varsity gala in 2007 and 2008. In 2008 and 2009 the team hosted the Bristol Varsity gala against local rival universities, coming first in both. In recent years the BUCS stats are:
