What is
the URNU?
- Bristol University Royal
Naval Unit, known as Bristol URNU, is a Royal Naval ReserveUnit
which recruits only amongst undergraduates at universities in the
Bristol and Bath area.
- It is the Royal Navy's
equivalent of the Bristol University Officers Training Corps and
the Bristol University Air Squadron.
- The Royal Navy's aim for
the URNU is to
educate a wide spectrum of high calibre undergraduates who show
potential as society's future leaders and opinion formers in order
to better inform them of the need for and role of the Royal Navy,
and to develop awareness of career opportunities in the
service.
What do
members of the URNU do?

- A wide range of adventurous
trainingactivities including
hill walking, offshore sailing, parachuting, diving and
hang-gliding
|

|

|
- A variety of formal and informal social
activitiessuch as Mess
Dinners (particularly Trafalgar Night), Ladies Nights, an
Annual Cocktail Party and more informal
occasions
|

|
|
- Play various sportsagainst
other URNUs and other local student
teams
|
|
|

|
- Take part in local military ceremonial
occasions such as the annual Remembrance Sunday Parade in
Bristol
|
What will
you get out of the URNU?
|
|

|

|
|
- You will get experience of operating as a
member of a team to achieve common goals and
objectives
- You will learn about the
Royal Navy, its role and
activities in the modern world, its equipment and its
future plans
|
- If you interested in
joining the Royal Navy, membership of the URNU will prepare you for
the Admiralty Interview Board (the Royal Navy's "entrance exam")
and improve your chances of passing (but we will put absolutely no pressure on you
to join - recruiting is not our function)
- You will be a member of the
Royal Naval Reserve holding the rank of Officer Cadet or, after 12
months satisfactory service, Midshipman and will be issued with RNR
uniform.
- You will be paidfor time you spend on duty and, if you meet your
minimum
training commitment, you will receive
an annual Bountyin addition to
your pay
- Lastly, but by no means
least, you will get a great deal of fun and friendship with the
other members of the Unit and the opportunity to meet students at
local Universities other than your own
What do
we expect of you?
- We
ask you to attend for training on at least 16 Thursday evenings and
to undertake at least 3 weekends at sea during each academic year,
and to undertake a two week continuous training period at sea
during either the Easter or the Summer vacation
- Whilst you are on duty you
will be expected to conform to Naval Discipline in all respects -
but the discipline is not harsh or pointless, it is there to enable
you and your shipmates to get the job done better and more
effectively, and to increase your satisfaction in a job well
done
- Joining
the URNU does not commit you in any way to joining the
RNand we will put no pressure on you
- we want you to learn about the Royal Navy and then become our
ambassadors in your civilian life and employment
