How do you join the URNU?

What is the URNU?

  • Bristol University Royal Naval Unit, known as Bristol URNU, is a Royal Naval ReserveUnit which recruits only amongst undergraduates at universities in the Bristol and Bath area.
  • It is the Royal Navy's equivalent of the Bristol University Officers Training Corps and the Bristol University Air Squadron.
  • The Royal Navy's aim for the URNU is to educate a wide spectrum of high calibre undergraduates who show potential as society's future leaders and opinion formers in order to better inform them of the need for and role of the Royal Navy, and to develop awareness of career opportunities in the service.

What do members of the URNU do?

  • A wide range of adventurous trainingactivities including hill walking, offshore sailing, parachuting, diving and hang-gliding

  •  A variety of formal and informal social activitiessuch as Mess Dinners (particularly Trafalgar Night), Ladies Nights, an Annual Cocktail Party and more informal occasions

  • Play various sportsagainst other URNUs and other local student teams

  • Take part in local military ceremonial occasions such as the annual Remembrance Sunday Parade in Bristol

What will you get out of the URNU?

  • You will get experience of operating as a member of a team to achieve common goals and objectives
  • You will learn about the Royal Navy, its role and activities in the modern world, its equipment and its future plans
  • If you interested in joining the Royal Navy, membership of the URNU will prepare you for the Admiralty Interview Board (the Royal Navy's "entrance exam") and improve your chances of passing (but we will put absolutely no pressure on you to join - recruiting is not our function)
  • You will be a member of the Royal Naval Reserve holding the rank of Officer Cadet or, after 12 months satisfactory service, Midshipman and will be issued with RNR uniform.
  • You will be paidfor time you spend on duty and, if you meet your minimum training commitment, you will receive an annual Bountyin addition to your pay
  • Lastly, but by no means least, you will get a great deal of fun and friendship with the other members of the Unit and the opportunity to meet students at local Universities other than your own

What do we expect of you?

  • We ask you to attend for training on at least 16 Thursday evenings and to undertake at least 3 weekends at sea during each academic year, and to undertake a two week continuous training period at sea during either the Easter or the Summer vacation
  • Whilst you are on duty you will be expected to conform to Naval Discipline in all respects - but the discipline is not harsh or pointless, it is there to enable you and your shipmates to get the job done better and more effectively, and to increase your satisfaction in a job well done
  • Joining the URNU does not commit you in any way to joining the RNand we will put no pressure on you - we want you to learn about the Royal Navy and then become our ambassadors in your civilian life and employment

How do you join the URNU?
