Student Funding Office

About the team

The Student Funding Office is a student facing office which provides information, advice and guidance on all aspects of student funding.  We administer a range of bursaries, scholarships, studentships and discretionary hardship fund awards to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

In addition to the wide range of funding scheme administration and associated reporting requirements, the office also contributes to the University’s strategic policy discussion in relation to funding schemes.

General Support

Information, advice and guidance. Pre-entry information to applicants (parents, sponsors and carers) with a specific focus on undergraduate statutory funding advice.  Advice to current students on any aspect of financial support, such as budgeting, funding options, and benefit entitlement.

Discretionary Hardship Funds.  We assess applications and administer a range of discretionary hardship funds for current students.  This includes annual policy review to ensure policy compliance and inform our ongoing commitment to process improvement.

Student case work. Individual and bespoke advice depending on the query, but often in relation to complex issues surrounding statutory support entitlement as a result of a student withdrawal, suspension or transfer. With respect to undergraduate students, liaison with student funding providers in the case of incorrect assessments.

Miscellaneous scholarships and awards.  The office administers and assesses applications to a number of ad-hoc award schemes, pre-entry and in year, for both undergraduates and postgraduates.

Professional and Career Development Loans (PCDLs).  The Student Funding Office is the only authorised signatory for the PCDL loan scheme.

Undergraduate support

Statutory funding support.  Liaison with student funding providers and the Student Loans Company to assist students with queries in relation to their entitlement and to ensure they receive the correct support

Bursaries.  Administration of the undergraduate bursary scheme that forms the key part of our student funding package within the Universities’ Access Agreement with the Office for Fair Access (OFFA).  This involves making payments to almost 3000 students and contributing to the annual monitoring and reporting exercise to OFFA.

Postgraduate support

Postgraduate awards (studentships and scholarships).  We provide advice on eligibility on a range of internally and externally funded schemes and process payments to approximately 1300 students.

Research Council Reporting. Updating of the JeS online submission tool to collect a range of institutional data in relation to research council funded students.  We maintain the reporting on directly funded students, the annual batch updating exercise and the PhD submission survey.
