Housing Advice Fair 2017

Starting to think about finding private-rented accommodation for the 2018/19 academic year? Visit the Housing Advice Fair for the information you need for safe and successful house hunting.

Time: 10am - 3pm
Venue:Anson Rooms at the student Union Richmond Building

Staff from the Accommodation Office will be on hand with a presentation every half hour with essential information about the different ways you can go about your search, for example how, where, when to look and addressing the questions you need to consider in order to find the right place along with a stall for individual queries. 

There will also be stands from a host of organisations to advise on all the other questions you may have on issues such as gas safety, fire safety, deposit protection, bills, living in the community, how to deal with problem landlords, what to do if you don't have a guarantor, contents insurance, funding issues and home security.

Bristol SU Lettings, the Student Union's own lettings agency who have a large portfolio of student accommodation will also be on hand to answer your queries and put you on their mailing list ready for their property release date on 4 December.

Additionally there will be stalls from a number of other agencies and housing suppliers to give you an idea of what is available on the market.

The Fair is also an opportunity connect with other students looking for accommodation.

The Housing Advice Fair will be taking place between 10am - 3pm on Thursday 30 November in the Anson Rooms at the student Union Richmond Building.

University of Bristol Accommodation Office
Offering advice on the private renatals market in Bristol, with factsheets and resources for you to take away to help get your house search underway. 

University-allocated accommodation for returners
Find out about the options for returning to live in a University-allocated residence as a returner, including when the applications open.   

Bristol City Councils Private Housing Team
We regulate health and safety standards in privately rented houses and flats. Students can ask us questions about what to do if they’re concerned with the condition of the property and their landlord is not being helpful. We can also point them towards other organisations who might be able to help with less serious problems. We can also offer advice about HMOs, property licensing, tenancy relations and most other things related to private rented property.

Marks out of tenancy
Marks Out Of Tenancy is a website that enables tenants to review their tenancy experience. You can rate your landlord, letting agent, the property and the neighbourhood. We're working with students' unions, tenants groups, housing charities, landlords and landlord associations to make renting better for everyone involved. Check out reviews of properties, suburbs, landlords and letting agents before you hand any money over.

Bristol Students Union
The Ready to Rent Bristol SU stall can answer the following range of questions (also covered in a take away booklet), What you need to know before renting - advice when choosing housemates, house size, location, budgets etc, when to start renting, where to start the search / what to look out for, how to book a viewing / things to do before the viewing, what to do before you sign, who is responsible for what. And lastly we will provide a checklist students can bring to viewings.

Student funding
On hand to offer advice if you have concerns about making ends meet, come and talk to us about making an application to the Financial assistance fund. Speak to us about specific issues about money from the government, e.g. it is delayed and you are getting nowhere fast in getting the issue resolved come and see us, if your funding has been temporarily delayed but you expect to receive it the near future, but are struggling in the meantime, you can talk to us about getting an interest free short term loan. If you think that you could be eligible for a bursary, but have not yet heard from us, come and talk to us about it. If you have any general money worries and want to talk to one of our advisers, come and talk to us. 

Community Liaison
Visit our stand to find out what you need to take responsibility for when living independently in the community, how to manage waste and recycling, how to get involved in your local community and build good relationships with your neighbours, and how to avoid being complained about. You can also find out about our community ambassadors, and community fund, as well as ask us about what to do if you need help or are concerned about a housemate, and keeping yourself and your property safe. You can also ask about the best areas of the city to live in as a student and take part in our recycling challenge for the chance to win an Amazon voucher.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service
Between April 2016 and March 2017, firefighters from Avon Fire and Rescue Service were called to 53 false alarms at student accommodation in Bristol. They'll be on hand at the fair to help you to reduce false alarm calls by raising awareness of fire safety. You'll also be able to ask about your landlords obligations and top tips for keeping safe. 

Bristol Students' Union Wellbeing Network
The Wellbeing Network understand the importance of feeling able to manage and limit the stress associated with looking for a house to rent. We are here to listen to any concerns you may have about housing. We are fellow students who are here to ensure your approach to house hunting incorporates thinking about yourself and your emotional and well being needs as well as to offer practical tips on finding the right housemates and coping with different scenarios linked to this. GasSafe Register

Gas Safe Register is the only official list of gas engineers who are registered to work safely and legally on gas in the United Kingdom. As students head back to university and move into private rented accommodation, Gas Safe Register will be on hand at the Housing Advice fair to offer all the information you need to stay safe. 

Housing Hand
The University has established a relationship with Housing Hand, a company that offer a fully comprehensive guarantor service available to all students and staff. Whether you are from the UK or from abroad, you can qualify for Housing Hand guarantor service on some conditions.

The site has a mix of 8 studios, 30 ensuites and 119 non ensuite rooms. All ensuites and non ensuites are in clusters of 3-5 bedrooms with a total of 40 flats. In terms of additional space the site has a brand new gym, social area with TV and free pool table along with additional study space for our students to use. It has been very popular with our students so far and we hope this continues throughout the year.
