These pages are for all students living in, or wanting to move to University-allocated accommodation. Here you can find contact details for your residence, the rules and regulations for living in our accommodation, and details on what to do if you have a complaint. If you need information on any other aspect of your life in our residences, you can contact us at any time.
To request a repair or replacement
You can find quick links for requesting repairs or replacements, as well as a whole host of other information about your residence by visiting the residence guides for current students. You always need to make your request using the correct process for your residence so we have a record of it.
If the repair is not done or replacement not provided
You can report concerns about your rent calculation or report lost or damaged property on our reporting problems page.
The Accommodation Office can provide information and advice to all postgraduate students, regardless of where you are living. If the information you need is not available here, please contact us for advice.
Transfer between university-allocated residences
How to apply to transfer residence
You can apply to transfer to an alternative University-allocated residence by filling in the transfer application form, which will go live from the first week of October. You can fill out the form yourself although we advise that you speak to a member of your Residential Life team before doing so, so that they can offer you further advice. Please note that there are very few vacancies available in postgraduate residences so we may not be able to meet your request straight away. Once we have received your form the Postgraduate Allocations officer will be in touch within three working days to advise you of any vacancies.

When you are offered a transfer
If you are offered a transfer you will be given a deadline by which to view and accept the room. If you do not accept within the deadline, the room will be offered to someone else. You may be liable to pay a re-letting fee of up to £100 on completion of a transfer between residences, please see the residence conditions.
Leaving your residence due to withdrawing from University
If you are moving out of your University allocated accommodation because you are withdrawing or suspending your studies please complete our Intention to leave form
If you are withdrawing from University for health reasons, you will be liable for the rent on your room up to the date that you submit this form or until you vacate your room, whichever date is later. If you are withdrawing for any other reason, you are liable for two weeks rent from the date that you submit this form. If you have any questions about leaving your residence, and what this means for your tenancy you can always contact us.
Your residence will check with your department who will need to confirm that you are withdrawing or suspending studies before you can be released from your rent liability.
You must always discuss your suspension or withdrawal with your academic department, personal tutor or supervisor. The Student Funding Office can offer advice on how your fee loan or maintenance payments will be affected by a withdrawal or suspension of studies.
If you think you will want university accommodation next year you will need to apply as a returner. Applications open in December of each year please visit our home page for notifications.
Leaving University-allocated accommodation during your tenancy
If you plan to move out of your residence but continue to study at the University, make sure you have read and understand the cancellation policy in your contract. Please note:
- You will remain liable for the rent on your room until a replacement tenant takes over your contract, or until the end of the contract if a replacement tenant can't be found.
- You will be charged a fee of up to £100 to cover the costs of reletting your room.
Take the following steps to make sure your move goes smoothly:
Step 1 Complete the intention to leave form.
Step 2 Add your details to the bulletin board. Make it clear which date the room is available from.Note that we will not accept a student who is already living in University allocated accommodation as a replacement.
Step 3 When you find a replacement tenant, you must inform the Accommodation Office that you intend to transfer your tenancy.
Step 4 You and your replacement both need to go to your accommodation provider and arrange to transfer the tenancy. Accommodation providers are:
- Orchard Heights and The Courtrooms - The University of Bristol Accommodation Office
- Chantry Court - Unite at the Chantry Court office
- Deans Court - A2Dominion at the Deans Court Office
- Woodland Court - A2Dominion at the Woodland Court Office
Your provider will check with the accommodation office to make sure your replacement is a University of Bristol student.
Step 5 Once the move is complete you must tell the Accommodation Office, otherwise you may not receive any refund that is owed.
Moving into a university-allocated residence during the academic year
If you're a student who doesn't currently live in a University-allocated residence, but wants to move into one, please contact the accommodation office.
Future accommodation options
Remaining in University-allocated residences
A number of places are available for postgraduate returners, i.e. students in their second or subsequent year of study, applications open in February. You can chose to remain in your current residence or move to a new one.
Privately rented accommodation
Most students will live in privately rented houses or flats after their first year at University. You can find out more about the process on our privately-rented pages. Please be aware that private landlords will usually require a UK guarantor or demand up to a year's rent in advance.
When you have found a property we will be happy to look over your contract with you. If you run into difficulties during your tenancy we have trained advisers who can help sort out any problems. Use the advice form to contact us.
Senior Resident positions
Postgraduate students can apply to be senior residents or student wardens in University-allocated residences.
