Choosing your accommodation

Choosing what type of accommodation will suit you best can be difficult, but there are some main points to consider about your lifestyle and preferences.

Cost

It may seem obvious but think carefully about what you can afford. First work out how much money you will have from sponsorship, student loans, grants, parental support, savings or part time work.

Next add up all the essential expenses you may have. These will include food, clothes, travel, toiletries, books, printing and other course resources.

Then add on an amount for going out and entertainment plus sports membership, telephone and internet service charges. This can all add up to around £2000 per year. Taking one from the other will give you an idea of how much you can pay for your accommodation fees.

Remember that fees for University allocated accommodation include your fuel, water and internet costs. Insurance for your personal possessions is also included in these fees unless living at Deans or Woodland Court. You should allow around £700 per year for these bills if you choose to live in the private sector.

Contract length

You will not be able to move into your accommodation before the move in date.

Postgraduate contracts are usually 50 or 51 weeks in length and each residence has a tenancy with different start and end dates.

It is important to check your course requirements before choosing the residence with the most suitable dates, students attending summer language courses at the University should choose a residence with a move in date of 14 September 2013.

Room types

Our rooms come in many different shapes and sizes and there may be considerable variation within the same rent band. Please be aware that you may be accommodated in a room that is somewhat smaller or larger than another room in the same rent band.

En suite

Although an en suite may seem attractive at first there are a number of drawbacks which you should bear in mind:

  • The additional build and maintenance costs means that en suites can be considerably more expensive than standard rooms
  • The living space is often quite a bit smaller in en suites than in standard rooms
  • There will be no other facilities in your flat so all your visitors or guests will have to use your en suite
  • There are many more applications for en suites than there are rooms available

Standard single with shared bathroom

Bathroom provision for standard (non-en suite) rooms varies from residence to residence but generally the maximum sharing a bathroom will be 5.

Studio

There are a very small number of studios in university allocated accommodation. This accommodation consists of a sleeping area, kitchen area and bathroom which are not shared with any other students. The studio is the most expensive room type.

Internet

Internet

ResNet provides high speed wired and wireless Internet access for post graduate students in all study bedrooms (except at Blenheim Court where Internet is provided by StudentCom). It is included free of charge in all University owned residences and is also available in Unite House, Chantry Court and Woodland Court.

Over 90 per cent of students rate ResNet as good or excellent.

Sporting facilities

The University has excellent sports facilities, catering for everyone from casual exercisers looking for fun and fitness to competitors aiming for international success and Olympic gold.

The Indoor Centre, located in the heart of the University precinct, houses a newly refurbished state-of-the-art fitness suite, exercise studios, a weights room, a large sports hall and an indoor jogging track. There is a wide range of exercise classes for all tastes and levels.

The Indoor Centre also houses the University's Sports Medicine Clinic, which provides physiotherapy, osteopathy, massage and Pilates. Discounted rates apply if you have a Sports and Activity Pass.

At the University's 33-metre swimming pool, housed in the Students' Union building, you can participate in activities such as waterpolo, canoeing and scuba-diving, as well as recreational and competitive swimming. Beginners and improvers' swimming lessons are available.

The University's 38-acre Coombe Dingle Sports Complex provides first-class pitches for hockey, football, cricket, netball, lacrosse and rugby. There is also a four-court Indoor Tennis Centre and ten outdoor tennis courts, which have been developed in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association.

Cycling

Many students choose to get around Bristol on a cycle and there are ample secure storage facilities for bikes at all our residences.

Cars

Bristol is an extremely congested city and students are urged not to bring a car to University unless it is essential. There is no car parking at any of the postgraduate residences.
