The Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol benefits from an endowed chair - the Sir George White Chair. This is endowed from a benefaction of the Bristol Aeroplane Company (later to become British Aerospace and now Airbus in Filton) in order to establish aeronautical engineering at the University of Bristol in 1945. It was first awarded to Prof A.R. Collar CBE, FRS who later became president of the Royal Aeronautical Society. More recently, it has been held by Professor Martin Lowson and Professor Mike Friswell.
