Bristol graduate Gaositwe Chiepe (MA 1959) has been honoured by the Swedish king as the Commander of Royal Order of Polar Star this year. Dr Chiepe is the first Botswana woman to receive such a high Swedish award. Former Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden, Lena Hjelm-Wallem, revealed Dr Chiepe was chosen for the award due to her dedication to the development of Bostwana, adding that she used diplomacy to fight apartheid South Africa and that she played an important role in the peace process in Mozambique after many years of civil war.
