Search for Bristol surfing girl of 1988

2 June 2006

The search is on for the Bristol graduate who is thought to be the first female to surf the Severn Bore.

The search is on for the Bristol graduate who is thought to be the first female to surf the Severn Bore. Rowena Wilson, a Brighton-based writer and surfer, is putting together a book about surfing women of the UK. Through her research she learnt that the first female to surf the Severn Bore was from Bristol University and that she surfed it back in 1988. Beyond this she has been unable to find any more details about her.

‘Unfortunately, no one can tell me her name,’ said Rowena. ‘I would be grateful if anyone can help me with this. Finding her name would be good, any further details would be great (especially pictures), so I hope this rings a bell for someone’.

Rowena would also like to hear about any other unusual stories relating to women. ‘Perhaps someone has an elderly relative that used to belly-board decades ago, or you yourself have surfed some really unusual part of our coastline or during an important part of our land's general history’, she said.  ‘Or perhaps surfing spans several generations of women in your family or that surfing has been your salvation ever since University?’
