Students are renowned for their love of beer, but for Bristol graduates Dr Andrew Schofield (BSc 1988) and Dr Gene Rowe (BSc 1988), this love turned into a life-long passion. So much so, that it inspired them to write a book about it.

The Quest for the Holy Ale is a comic fiction book which follows Barbarian trouble-shooter Terry Testosterone and junior barman Roffo on their quest to find the supreme brew.

Gene and Andrew met while studying at Bristol and it was here that the idea for the book was conceived. ‘We first met standing outside a geology lecture wondering why we were here when we’d both signed up for something completely different,' explains Gene. ‘After much beer drinking, curry eating and world travelling in search of the perfect night out, we decided to write a book about such a quest. This is that mighty tome.’

Gene is Head of Consumer Science at the Institute of Food Research while Andrew works in the Department of Physics at the University of Edinburgh.

The Quest for the Holy Ale is published by Melrose Books.
