The mince pie-eating contest at Wookey Hole in Somerset was won this year by Denzil Gunner (BSc 1999).

Denzil managed to eat 41 pies in just ten minutes, narrowly missing out on the previous year’s world record which stands at an astounding 46 pies eaten in the same amount of time.

Denzil’s incredible display of philanthropic gluttony came as part of a year of challenges to mark his 30th birthday. The big-hearted solicitor is hoping to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and the Stroke Association by achieving a number of self-set goals of which the pie-eating was just one of many.

In an interview on the BBC news website, Denzil revealed that his technique was ‘just to cram as many in as possible and drink as much water as I could because they are very dry’.

‘I didn't really think about it, I just kept on eating until they said “stop” and then I realised how ill I felt.’

In addition to supporting these worthy causes, Denzil’s pie-eating feat had the bonus of earning him a £1,000 cash prize and the chance to represent Britain at extreme-eating contests in the US.
