The real veal

Husband and wife team Jonathan Brown (BA 1997) and Vicky Brown (née Maiklem) (BSc 1996) have launched an ethical veal mail order service in response to the huge demand for their product.

The duo founded Bocaddon Farm Veal in late 2006. ‘We were living on Vicky's family's dairy farm in Cornwall, where the bull calves were being shot at birth, as is common on dairy farms across the UK due to the lack of demand for veal in this country,’ explains Jonathan. ‘I had read that it was possible to rear the calves in welfare-friendly conditions and still end up with a good product, so we initially took on half a dozen calves to see what would happen.’

Within six months they were selling at three farmers markets a week and supplying some of Cornwall's top restaurants, including Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall. They have expanded slowly since then, still rearing all the calves themselves.

Jonathan said: ‘We are passionate about what we do, as veal is still something of a taboo in this country and we would like to break down people's misconceptions about this much misunderstood product.’

Bocaddon Farm Veal is offering two different mixed boxes by mail order. Full details are available at www.bocaddonfarmveal.com. The meat is also sold at Exeter, Lostwithiel and Truro farmers markets.
