A Year of Living Musically charts Katherine Dixson’s (BA 1978) first year at the helm of a large amateur choral society.

Managing a choir isn’t easy at the best of times. Coordinating the voluntary helpers who get the show on the road, keeping singers, professional musical director and audiences satisfied and avoiding going into the red could be described as just the tip of the baton. Add the threatened amalgamation with a ‘rival’ choir, and it could easily break a novice Chairman without an overriding passion for music and the requisite sense of humour.

The March chapter features Katherine’s return to Bristol to hear internationally acclaimed concert organist and fellow alumna, Jennifer Bate OBE (BA 1966, Hon DMus 2007), gave a recital and illustrated lecture describing the evolution of the organ.
