Calling all golfers

21 September 2010

Golfers are needed to help defend the alumni title at next year’s Student, Staff and Alumni Golf Challenge.

Golfers are needed to help defend the alumni title at next year’s Student, Staff and Alumni Golf Challenge on Wednesday 4 May 2011 at Henbury Golf Club.

The inaugural challenge took place in April this year. In a closely-fought contest, the alumni team came out on top.

John Bramhall (BSc 1975) reported on the event: ‘In all, 34 golfers took part and, although the weather ranged from sunshine to torrential rain, some great golf was played in a competitive, but friendly, spirit. Star players from the student golf team and University staff were pitted against graduates ranging from 2007 back to 1954. In the end, youth and experience fought each other to a standstill as the teams tied on matches won and lost. Winning margins were then counted and a narrow victory was claimed by ... the alumni. Sue Dawes (BSc 1970) and Alex Fellowes (BEng  2003) won their match by the biggest margin. Other prizes were won by John Carr (BSc 1981), Stuart Palmer (BSc 1978) and students Alex Chatterton and Max Rose. ‘

The 2011 Golf Challenge will see a team of alumni once again take on a combined team of staff and students.

The event will follow a similar format to that in 2010: golfers will meet at 12 noon for coffee and bacon rolls, before teeing off at about 1.15pm. A rolling buffet will be available as people finish from about 5.30pm.
