Drama graduate Paul Skinner (BA 2008) has won the prestigious 2010 David Lean Award, which recognises emerging talent in the field of screenwriting.

Synthonia, the screenplay that won him the award, is set in Middlesbrough. It's about a young man who takes drastic steps to forge new relationships when faced with losing the only relationship he has ever had.

Paul said: ‘Studying at the Drama Department gave me the confidence to pursue a career as a writer. I worked with a lot of talented individuals during my time there, specifically BAFTA award-winning filmmaker Esther May Campbell (BA 1995), who gave me invaluable insight and guidance in how to be successful in the very competitive film and media industry.’

Paul plans to use the £5,000 prize to help develop Synthonia for production and has initiated plans with production companies to produce the micro-budget feature.
