2011 has been a landmark year for the election of Convocation Representatives on Court.

Following the decision of the 2010 Convocation AGM to allow ‘distance voting’, 1181 individual ballot papers were received, of which 1161 were valid. This is a remarkable result in that the number of voters who have participated in this election is approximately 15 times greater than in recent years.

The 5 on-line ballot papers were invalid because more than 25 candidates had been voted for. The 15 paper ballots that were invalid had not been signed. The ratio of on-line to paper ballots was 857 to 324 with the total number of votes cast being 12,040.

2010 was a very significant year in that it was a heavily contested election and that trend held steady this year, with 47 candidates for 25 places. However, every candidate is to be congratulated since each one received at least 148 votes. The maximum number of votes cast for a candidate was 420 and the 25 elected candidates received over 240 votes each.

Bill Ray (BSc 1975), Chairman of Convocation, said: “I am really delighted by the number of candidates who stood and the participation levels of alumni in this year’s voting.  It’s clear that the process of ‘distance voting’ has allowed a much greater number of alumni to have their say about who would represent them at Court.”
