Support the fight against cancer by running the Virgin London Marathon

5 September 2012

Five Bristol alumni have the opportunity to run the hugely popular Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 21 April 2013 to help raise money for the University's Cancer Research Fund. If you have missed out on a ballot place and are passionate about raising money for the fight against cancer, then please apply for a place using our application form.

In 2012, six alumni runners who have either directly experienced cancer, or have seen its impact in others, had University of Bristol marathon places. They raised an incredible £47,500 that will support vital early stage research into the search for new cancer treatments. That's an average of just under £8,000 each. You can find out more about their incredible journeys' and what motivated them on our news pages.

Bristol is at the forefront of research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a range of major cancers. The Bristol Cancer Research Fund provides vital pump-priming grants to promising young researchers. This work is analysing both the current treatment of patients and investigating potentially exciting targets for new treatments across a variety of cancers. These first steps are essential to any research journey; without the evidence gathered at this early stage it's impossible to attract support for larger trials. It's entirely thanks to our supporters that we are able to pursue these important lines of inquiry.

Christos Paraskeva, Professor of Experimental Oncology at Bristol, said: 'Money raised through charitable acts in this way is essential for us to be able to continue supporting new and innovative cancer research projects here in Bristol. Clearly, the more money in the Fund the more projects we can support.'

The University is also asking alumni who have already secured a ballot place for the London Marathon to join the Bristol team to raise money for the Bristol Cancer Research Fund. The bigger the team, the more money raised to fight cancer.
