26 April 2013

Over 300 Bristol alumni joined Bristol's President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Thomas (Hon LLD 2004), and 25 Bristol academics, staff and volunteers, for alumni events in Beijing and Shanghai this week.

Over 300 Bristol alumni joined Bristol's President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Thomas (Hon LLD 2004), and 25 Bristol academics, staff and volunteers, for alumni events in Beijing and Shanghai this week. The events dovetailed with a graduation celebration for 2013 graduates in Beijing, the University's first such overseas event.

Old friends met and many new friendships were forged, as hundreds of Bristol alumni from the 1970s through to 2013 gathered at the China World Hotel in Beijing on Saturday, and at the Shanghai Ritz Carlton on Monday.

The Chairman of Convocation, Bristol's alumni association, Bill Ray (BSc 1975), said "the Graduation Celebration and receptions in Beijing and Shanghai were a great success. Bristol's Chinese alumni now comprise our largest overseas alumni group and these were very special occasions."

Bill announced that senior alumni have agreed to become honorary Presidents of two groups in China:

  - Laurence Barron (LLD 1973), Chairman and CEO of EADS China will serve as Honorary President of a Beijing alumni group

  - Tim Bennett (MBA International Business 1998), Greater China Director of Pacific Strategies and Assessments, will serve as Honorary President of a Shanghai alumni group

Bristol alumni who would like to work with Laurence or Tim to organise future alumni activities in China may contact TJ Rawlinson, Director of Campaigns and Alumni Relations at tj.rawlinson@bristol.ac.uk.
