Best of Bristol Alumni Weekend 2014

This year, more than 480 alumni and friends came home to Bristol for the Alumni Weekend festivities, which included a packed programme of departmental tours, lunches, talks and more.

This year, more than 480 alumni and friends came home to Bristol for the Alumni Weekend festivities, which included a packed programme of departmental tours, lunches, talks and more.

Ahead of its opening in autumn, alumni had the unique opportunity to see the new state-of-the-art Life Sciences Building, home to the School of Biological Sciences. Gary Foster, Professor of Molecular Plant Pathology, took alumni on a behind-the-scenes tour, explaining how the project came to life, before guests enjoyed a buffet reception on the terrace roof with stunning views across Bristol.

On Saturday, after a collection of department tours around the University, alumni celebrated their graduation anniversaries with a commemorative Reunion Lunch in the fitting surrounds of the Great Hall. And a special, virtual guest, joined them all the way from the Pacific Ocean. Elsa Hammond (PhD 2012-) who, at the time, was rowing solo in the Great Pacific Race, briefly put down her oars to share the story of her journey so far. Nearly 200 alumni wished her good luck with a huge cheer.

After lunch, Matthew Baugh OBE (BA 1994, MSc 1997), former British Ambassador to Somalia, gave a passionate and inspiring talk about his experiences in countries affected by conflict. Matthew was the first British Ambassador to Somalia since the country collapsed into civil war and, in 2013, he received an OBE for his outstanding contribution to promoting peace and security in the country. The lecture was attended by 100 alumni, including his  family and friends, many of whom are also Bristol alumni.

We’d like to thank everyone who joined us in Bristol for the weekend, and all those who took part in making it a success. For photos and more information about the event, please visit our Alumni Weekend 2014 webpage and our Facebook page.
