Invincible Summer by Alice Adams (BA 1997)

21 November 2016

Inseparable throughout their time at the University of Bristol, Eva, Benedict, Sylvie and Lucien graduate in 1997, into an exhilarating world on the brink of the new millennium. But with each passing year, life brings the friends disaster, triumph, hope and heartbreak - will they remain as close as always as they face the highs and lows of adulthood?

As four friends graduate from university and make their first steps into the real world, they find their paths diverging: Eva, eager to shrug off her childhood hardships, finds a glamorous job in the City. Benedict stays in Bristol to embark on his PhD in Physics - and to pine for Eva. Siblings Sylvie, an artist, and Lucien, a flirtatious, charming club promoter who is also the object of Eva's affections, seek a more bohemian existence, opting for partying, adventure and travel.

In time, their twenties give way to their thirties, and the four friends struggle to navigate broken hearts and thwarted dreams. Scattered across Europe and no longer convinced they are truly the masters of their fates, the once close-knit friends find themselves filled with longing for their youth - and for one another. Broken hearts and broken careers draw the foursome together again, but in ways they never could have imagined.

Invincible Summer is a novel about the strength of finding the courage to carry on in the wake of disappointment, and a testament to love and friendship as powerful constants in an ever-changing world.
