Anatomy demonstrators

Becoming an anatomy demonstrator allows you to improve your knowledge of anatomy and gain considerable teaching experience demonstrating to a wide range of students. The Centre for Applied Anatomy teaches clinically relevant and applied anatomy across the Faculty of Health Science's professional programmes and to science students. Our comparative anatomy teaching employs vet demonstrators however the following pages apply specifically to demonstrators of human anatomy.

How we teach anatomy at Bristol

The majority of our human anatomy teaching at Bristol uses prosections of human cadavers, as well as models, radiographic images, pathological potted specimens and bones.

As part of this team of demonstrators you will assist Senior Anatomy Teaching Fellows who lead our teaching sessions.

Our facilitative learning style encourages our students to explore their learning and to build confidence in their ability.  The anatomy is always taught with close regard to function and clinical relevance.

Benefits of being an anatomy demonstrator

You will gain a considerable amount of teaching experience to a wide range of students.  You will also improve your own knowledge of anatomy.

You will have the opportunity to teach both undergraduate and postgraduate sessions, and will gain experience of medical, dental and science education, including assessment procedures.

You will join our regular meetings to discuss upcoming teaching and to review recent teaching sessions as a team.

You will have academic support for demonstrator review and development, will benefit from regular in-house teaching, and participate in the University's continuing professional development scheme for academics.

We also encourage our demonstrators to put forward posters and presentations to anatomy and medical education conferences.

Please note this post does not include the opportunity for research and there is no associated clinical work.

Demonstrator roles/responsibilities within the Centre include:

  • Undergraduate medical, dental and science anatomy teaching
  • Assessment procedures such as invigilation, the setting and subsequent marking of spot examinations
  • Pastoral support of students
  • External anatomy taught courses as part of the Vesalius Clinical Training Unit

Who we are looking for

All sorts of people make good demonstrators.  We are looking for enthusiastic teachers who have a keen interest in anatomy.

We also look for people with the potential to form a good educational relationship with our students.  It is important that our demonstrators can help our students to understand large amounts of complex information in a clear and concise way.

While the majority of our demonstrators are medically qualified, or are thinking about a career in surgery, this is not a prerequisite.

We welcome applications from all medical graduates and those from other healthcare professional backgrounds.

With an increased emphasis in our courses on applied anatomy, we are interested in individuals with a special interest in radiology and/or pathology.  Evidence of training in medical education is also an advantage.

How to apply

We advertise our demonstrator vacancies once annually, usually around January to March on the University of Bristol job website, and

Our posts start the following September on a 10-month fixed term contract until June.
