About the Aquatest system

What is the Aquatest System?

The Aquatest team led by the University of Bristol has developed a system for testing water samples for E. coli (an internationally recognised indicator of fecal contamination) that can be used without sophisticated laboratory equipment. It will be used in the field in developing countries, without electricity or skilled technicians.

The Aquatest System is composed of four components. The Aquatest is a small, single-use device for testing microbial water quality.  Additional components of the Aquatest system include an incubator, UV torch for reading results and, water quality reporter for recording, storing and transmitting water test results.

When will it be available?

The Aquatest research project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, concludes in September 2012. A laboratory validation of the Aquatest device performance will take place in 2011 and we are planning to collaborate with a few water-testing organizations to get feedback on field performance in 2011-2012.
