Continuing Education in Archaeology and Anthropology
Our Continuing Education programme co-ordinates and manages short courses and day schools in archaeology and related topics, as well as a part-time BA (Hons) degree in Archaeological Studies. The Director of the Continuing Education programme is Dr Stuart Prior.
We are committed to making the scholarship of the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology accessible to wider audiences through continuing education, and all our courses aim to accommodate the needs of mature students working towards part-time qualifications, professionals wishing to develop their knowledge of particular aspects of a subject, or simply interested members of the public with a passion for a particular topic, region or period.

DATES 2010-2011
APPLICATIONS ARE CURRENTLY BEING ACCEPTED FOR ENTRY IN AUTUMN 2010
The Centre offers a part-time degree, B.A. (Hons) in Archaeological Studies, for adult students who wish to pursue an interest in archaeology at undergraduate level. The course is taught one weekend a month, with one day dedicated to lectures and another to field-trips. This degree is achieved by progressing through three levels of study over a six-year period:
These courses are each run over a two year period and students can build up credits for a final degree by progressing through each of the three Levels. The Certificate (Level 1) can also be studied alone if students do not wish to continue to degree level, but admission to Diploma (Level 2) requires the pre-condition of completing the Certificate Level 1 course; admission to Level 3 requires the pre-condition of completing Levels 1 and 2.
We are able to accept students from other Universities, who have completed Levels 1 and 2 (upon proof of Certificate or Diploma) who wish to complete their degree at Bristol by taking Level 3 B.A. (Hons) in Archaeological Studies.
For further details about these courses, please see our Prospectus. If you are interested in applying, our application form and reference form can be downloaded in PDF format; you can type directly on the document using Adobe Reader, but unfortunately the document cannot be saved. Applications for starting the course in October 2010 are now being accepted, and please see student Peter Twinn's article in Past Horizons (page 20) to learn more about the opportunities offered by the part-time degree programme.
Fees: Please note that owing to a newly introduced government ruling there has been a change in the fee structure. The new tuition fees are based on the level of qualification which applicants have achieved already. Applicants who are aiming at a qualification whose level is equivalent to, or lower than, one they already hold are subject to the higher fees of £2,400/year. Those applying for a qualification whose level is higher than any qualification they already hold are subject to the lower fees of £1,000/year.
(In other words, if you have a Certificate and you are applying to do a Certificate, you have to pay the higher fee but if you have a Certificate and are applying for a Diploma, you are subject to the lower fees. If you have got a Certificate and are planning to do the degree over the six years, once you have passed the Certificate level you are subject to the lower fees.)
Interviews will be held in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology (Map) in June 2010 for October 2010 entry (Dates 2010-2011).

Important announcement about Continuing Education in Archaeology and Anthropology Courses: It has recently been suggested in the press that adult education courses at the University of Bristol will cease entirely from September 2009 as a result of the ELQ and current 'Credit Crunch'; however, this is not the case.
In archaeology, for example, the Certificate, Diploma and BA (Hons) in Archaeological Studies will continue to run. Also, there will be some provision of short courses, day schools and field schools linked to the part-time archaeology degree programme. For details see:
