Our Continuing Education programme co-ordinates and manages short courses and day schools in archaeology and related topics, as well as a part-time BA (Hons) degree in Archaeological Studies. The Director of the Continuing Education programme is Dr Volker Heyd.
We are committed to making the scholarship of the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology accessible to wider audiences through continuing education, and all our courses aim to accommodate the needs of mature students working towards part-time qualifications, professionals wishing to develop their knowledge of particular aspects of a subject, or simply interested members of the public with a passion for a particular topic, region or period.
We offer a part-time degree, B.A. (Hons) in Archaeological Studies, for students who wish to pursue an interest in archaeology at undergraduate level. The course is taught one weekend a month, with one day dedicated to lectures and another to field-trips. This degree is achieved by progressing through three levels of study over a six-year period:
These courses are each run over a two year period and students can build up credits for a final degree by progressing through each of the three Levels. The Certificate (Level 1) can also be studied alone if students do not wish to continue to degree level, but admission to Diploma (Level 2) requires the pre-condition of completing the Certificate Level 1 course; admission to Level 3 requires the pre-condition of completing Levels 1 and 2.
We are able to accept students from other Universities, who have completed Levels 1 and 2 (upon proof of Certificate or Diploma) who wish to complete their degree at Bristol by taking Level 3 B.A. (Hons) in Archaeological Studies.
Please see student Peter Twinn's article in Past Horizons (page 20) to learn more about the opportunities offered by the part-time degree programme. Dr Stuart Prior can also vouch for the benefits of Continuing Education.
Fees: At present there are two different levels of fees: £2,690 a year and £1,060 a year. Applicants aiming at a qualification whose level is equivalent to, or lower than, one they already hold are subject to the higher fees of £2,690 per year. Those applying for a qualification whose level is higher than any qualification they already hold are subject to the lower fees of £1,060 a year.
(In other words, if you have a Certificate and you are applying to do a Certificate, you have to pay the higher fee but if you have a Certificate and are applying for a Diploma, you are subject to the lower fees. If you have got a Certificate and are planning to do the degree over the six years, once you have passed the Certificate level you are subject to the lower fees.)
Fees may change in October 2012.
