The Bristol Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition promotes research into all aspects of Greco-Roman culture from antiquity to the present day, in the belief that classical culture remains a vital influence in the modern world. It embraces research from many fields, including history of all kinds, archaeology, literary studies, art history and philosophy, and has a particular focus on research that explores the links between ancient and modern.

The Institute was formed in 2004 through the merger of the Bristol Institute of Hellenic and Roman Studies, founded in 2000 by Robert Fowler, and the Bristol Centre for the Classical Tradition, founded by the late Thomas Wiedemann.  It achieves its aims by hiring postdoctoral research fellows and supporting their research, inviting distinguished scholars to give seminars and lectures, holding symposia and conferences, cultivating international links with other scholars and organisations, and supporting the development of research projects in the faculty.  It is closely associated with the University’s Reception research theme.

The work of the Institute would be impossible without the generous contributions of individual and corporate donors, and we would like to express our gratitude for their continued support. Some donors support specific activities, projects or positions (for example, postdoctoral fellowships or postgraduate studentships), others contribute to the income that supports our day-to-day activities and research events, and enables us to plan ahead and develop more ambitious projects. Information about our past and present donors can be found by using the link on the left.

Further information about past and present activities of the Institute, including forthcoming conferences and other events, can be found using the links on the left. If you have any enquiries about the work of the Institute, please contact the Director, Professor Robert Fowler, Department of Classics and Ancient History, University of Bristol, 3-5 Woodland Road, Bristol BS8 1TB (contact details) If you wish to discuss the possibility of making a donation to support our work, please contact the Director, or Ms Katie McKeogh (contact details) in the Campaigns and Alumni Relations Office.
