The Kingdom of Kush, one of Africa’s great ancient States, rose to prominence in the 8th century BC when it took control of Egypt from its heartland in modern day Sudan and ruled both territories as the 25th Dynasty. This presentation will focus on the rise of Kush, viewed from the perspective of ancient technological expertise, notably the capacity to produce large quantities of iron.
The role and impact that ferrous technology had on the history of Kush, during its rise, its glory days and during its decline, will be explored. The results of 12 seasons of excavations at the City of Meroe will be presented to illustrate the broader questions that are being explored, including social organisation, power structures, environmental impact and ancient economy.
