IGRCT Donors’ Celebration 2022: student workshop and public lecture with Prof. Jackie Murray

14 December 2022, 11.30 AM - 14 December 2022, 6.30 PM

Professor Jackie Murray, Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Kentucky

Workshop: Old Council Chamber, Wills Memorial Building; Lecture: Peel Lecture Theatre, Geographical Sciences Building, and online

The Institute for Greece, Rome, and the Classical Tradition (IGRCT) will host its annual Donors’ Celebration on Wednesday 14th December 2022. This year, we have invited Professor Jackie Murray, Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Kentucky, to deliver a public lecture and a student workshop.

Student workshop (in-person), 11.30-13.00

Professor Murray will host a workshop for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, entitled ‘Doing something different with language,' which will take place in the Old Council Chamber, Wills Memorial Building, at 11.30am-1.00pm.

During the workshop, Prof. Murray will talk about her work on Patois Iliad, a creolizing translation of Homer’s poetry on which she is working in collaboration with fellow classicist Sasha-Mae Eccleston, and poets Ishion Hutchinson and Claudia Rankine. Prof. Murray will discuss with students the origin, scope, aims and challenges of her project, and explore some examples of the translation challenges she faces.

*Please note that knowledge of ancient Greek is not required for this workshop!*

After the workshop, refreshments in the form of mulled wine, mince pies and sandwiches will be provided. You can register for this free workshop on Eventbrite: https://igrctdonors2022workshop.eventbrite.co.uk

Public lecture (hybrid), 17.00-18.00

Prof. Murray will then deliver a lecture on ‘Race and Racecraft in Greek Epic,’ using Apollonius’ Argonautica as a case study. Professor Murray’s lecture dismantles the myth of Greek heroes battling monsters by showing how it is mobilised to justify dehumanising violence committed by the Argonauts against indigenous herders.

This free lecture, which is open to all, will take place in the Peel Lecture Theatre (Geographical Sciences building) and also online (Zoom) at 5-6pm, and will be followed by a drinks reception. You can register here: https://igrctdonors2022.eventbrite.co.uk
