More about this project

This project will pay for the digitisation of the record collection which forms part of an important archive acquired by the University Department of Music in 2011 from the collection of Derek C. Hulme. Hulme's collection includes Soviet, American, and East and West European performances of Shostakovich's music since the 1950s and thus is an ideal research collection for analysing issues of cultural influence, transfer and difference via the medium of performance. This project will digitise the whole record collection of c. 800 78s and LPs of Shostakovich performances, many very rare and never re-issued, and link them to the Arts Library Special Collections and Music websites, placing them on a dedicated research depository server. Access will be completely open to all within the international university network via sign-on and to anyone else who applies. This project will enable research into Shostakovich performance practice and facilitate future applications for a collaborative proposal with a PhD studentship into this new area of performance scholarship.
