About the Animal Services Unit

The Animal Services Unit (ASU) is part of the Vice Chancellor's office within the University, and reports to the Deputy-Vice Chancellor, Professor David Clarke.

We provide facilities, services and advice for all scientists within the University who need to carry out research using animals. This work is ethically reviewed, carefully regulated and kept to a minimum, within the overall objectives of advancing knowledge in the areas of biological, biomedical and veterinary sciences. The University of Bristol only uses animals in research programmes of the highest quality and where there are no alternatives. All scientists and technicians engaged in this area are actively involved in the 3Rs (reduction, refinement and replacement).

Researchers working with animals at the University of Bristol must meet the high ethical standards and adhere to strict legislation that safeguards animal welfare in the UK, and comply with the University's policy on working with animals.
