Roy obtained his Ph.D. with the Colloid group at the University of Bristol, after studying Physics and Chemistry at the University of London.

He has worked in many areas of research in colloid and surface chemistry, including emulsions, aerosols, foams, particulates, composites and solution polymers. He has also been involved in statistical mechanical modelling of polymers and particles and fluid dynamic modelling of elongational flows. He has a background in instrument building and signal processing. He has published a number of papers on rheology and colloids, contributed chapters to text books and delivered plenary lectures. He coauthored with Jim Goodwin a 'best seller' on rheology.

He is the Executive Manager of the Bristol Colloid Centre, and has overall responsibility for the management and operation of the centre.
