European Summer Schools in Vascular Biology ran very successfully over the last 5 years thanks to funding from the European Community and lately the European Society of Cardiology. Popular Summer Schools have also taken place in several continental European countries but never before in the UK. We have gained experience organising these Summer Schools and thanks to generous support from the British Heart Foundation, several front-running cardiovascular biology societies and some industrial companies, we are now able offer a 4 day residential Summer School programme at nominal cost. Students will have the opportunity to present their work, learn form an expert faculty and sample the many interesting delights of Bristol.

In a role inspired by Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, Professor Andrew Newby will seek to find the agent responsible for the near sudden death at Bristol International Airport of one of Britain’s most intrepid adventurers, Sir Ranulph Fiennes. He will visit the scene of the crime – the coronary artery – and interrogate each of the likely culprits. He will describe how the latest scientific tools are providing ever-greater ‘forensic’ clues to identify the guilty party. Finally, addressing all the assembled suspects, he will give his verdict and suggest how such crimes may be avoided in future.

"Trust me: I'm a cardiac surgeon" - 1st BHI Public Lecture

Prof Gianni Angelini gave the 1st Bristol Heart Institute public lecture on July 12th 2006, entitled:"Trust me: I'm a cardiac surgeon". The lecture, which also acted as the official re-launch ceremony of the BHI, was held in the Victoria Rooms, Queens Road, and attended by about 400 people. Prof Selby Knox, pro-vice chancellor of the university opened proceedings, and the lecture was closed by Prof Len Hall, Dean of Medical and Veterinary Sciences. It was followed by a drinks reception for everyone at which there was an opportunity for the public to meet and talk with scientists and clinicians from the BHI.
The patron of the BHI, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, unfortunately could not attend the lecture, but expressed his thanks and support for the BHI via a video. Sir Ranulph underwent bypass surgery at Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1993, and says of the operation:
"The double bypass I received was so successful that 3 months later I ran 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days".
