Who nearly killed Sir Ranulph Fiennes? A private investigation into the causes of heart attacks and how to stop them

In a role inspired by Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, Professor Andrew Newby will seek to find the agent responsible for the near sudden death at Bristol International Airport of one of Britain’s most intrepid adventurers, Sir Ranulph Fiennes. He will visit the scene of the crime – the coronary artery – and interrogate each of the likely culprits. He will describe how the latest scientific tools are providing ever-greater ‘forensic’ clues to identify the guilty party. Finally, addressing all the assembled suspects, he will give his verdict and suggest how such crimes may be avoided in future.

Autologous Stem Cells for Cardiovascular Disease

Joint Meeting with the Wales Heart Institute 24th April 2007

A joint meeting of the Bristol and Wales Heart Institutes was held at Burwalls Conference Centre, Clifton, Bristol. The meeting was organised jointly by Professors Andrew Newby (Bristol) and Tudor Griffith (Cardiff) and attended by over fifty researchers from the two Institutes.

24th May: "Stem cells to regenerate arterial vessels: experimental and clinical evidences"

The worldwide epidemic of ischemic disease urgently requires innovative treatments. This lecture will address the concept that stem cells that are present in adult tissues can be explanted and manipulated to accomplish curative tasks in human diseases, with particular focus on peripheral ischemia, myocardial infarction and diabetes. 
This inaugural lecture is free and open to all. No prior booking necessary. 

 

"Trust me: I'm a cardiac surgeon" - 1st BHI Public Lecture

Photo Prof Angelini with Mayor of BristolProf Gianni Angelini gave the 1st Bristol Heart Institute public lecture on July 12th 2006, entitled:
"Trust me: I'm a cardiac surgeon". The lecture, which also acted as the official re-launch ceremony of the BHI,  was held in the Victoria Rooms, Queens Road, and attended by about 400 people. Prof Selby Knox, pro-vice chancellor of the university opened proceedings, and the lecture was closed by Prof Len Hall, Dean of Medical and Veterinary Sciences. It was followed by a drinks reception for everyone at which there was an opportunity for the public to meet and talk with scientists and clinicians from the BHI.

The patron of the BHI, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, unfortunately could not attend the lecture, but expressed his thanks and support for the BHI via a video. Sir Ranulph underwent bypass surgery at Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1993, and says of the operation:
"The double bypass I received was so successful that 3 months later I ran 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days".
