Our mission is to:

- Use this knowledge for the benefit of our patients
- Provide leadership in training the next generation of top scientists and academic clinicians
- Act as a centre for public engagement, information, and debate
- Be a source of advice for patients and policy makers
Uniquely we have the combination of:
- NIHR funded Biomedical Research Unit in Cardiovascular Disease
- The top academic cardiac surgery unit in the UK
- Multidisciplinary teams working on topics that include the clinically important atherothrombosis

Internationally outstanding basic science research in:
- cardiac physiology and metabolism
- hypertension
- regenerative medicine
- vascular and microvascular biology
- cardiac electrophysiology
- mitochondrial function
- cardiac excitation-contraction coupling and arrythmias
- cardiovascular disease epidemiology
- New state-of the art Bristol Heart Institute Hospital
- New Clinical Research Imaging facilities (CRIC)
Our priorities for 2012 - 2016 are to:
- Further develop our clinical research pillar and renew our BRU status (we achieved this in late 2011)
- Further develop our basic science research pillar and align the BHI to Centre of Excellence status
- Complete translation process of our research on atherothrombosis
- Create a centre for Regenerative Medicine integrated into the BHI
- Train the next generation of world-class cardiovascular scientists and clinical academics
