We are seeking 3 talented graduate students for an MRC capacity building PhD programme in the area of Medical and Biological Imaging. This programme, entitled "Quantitative imaging of cellular dynamics" provides outstanding training in quantitative imaging in cell biology in state-of-the art modern cell imaging facilities in the School of Medical Sciences. Candidates trained in cell biology and candidates from biophysical/mathematical backgrounds with a desire to apply these skills to cell biology research are particularly encouraged to apply. |

| We stand at an important juncture in the era of post-genomic biomedical research. The continuing identification of gene mutations and cellular perturbations that lie at the heart of important disease states means that we have the potential to make significant and rapid progress in rational drug design. However, in order to understand disease processes, one needs to fully understand gene function in a cellular and tissue/organism context. Thus, our understanding and treatment of human disease increasingly relies upon cell biology, and cell biology is itself highly reliant upon imaging.
This Programme of 3 fully funded, 4 year PhD studentships will provide outstanding training in a broad range of Bioimaging techniques (e.g. confocal and wide-field microscopy, fixed and live-cell imaging, in vivo imaging, electron microscopy, TIRF microscopy, video-enhanced DIC microscopy), whilst also providing students with excellent training in quantitative aspects of Bioimaging (including force measurements, object identification/tracking, dynamic image quantitation, tomography). Our mission is to train highly skilled future Bioimaging experts who will be uniquely placed to exploit the quantitative elements of modern Bioimaging in biomedical research. |
