Gareth Jones was awarded the Gerrit S. Miller Award at the University of Toronto on 29 October. The Gerrit S. Miller Award is presented occasionally at the annual North American Symposium on Bat Research to persons in recognition of outstanding service and contribution to the field of bat biology. The award is named after Gerrit S. Miller, Jr., an eminent early 20th Century bat biologist at the Smithsonian Institution who worked on evolutionary relationships among bats. Gareth became the 21st recipient and third European to win the award: previous winners include Donald R. Griffin, the discoverer of echolocation, and Merlin Tuttle, the founder of Bat Conservation International.
