Celebrating 10 years of the Green Impact Awards
Press release issued: 11 December 2018
Today the iconic Wills Memorial Building will be lit in green to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Green Impact Awards, a University of Bristol-born environmental initiative, which has gone on to have national impact, having been adopted by over 400 UK organisations.
Over the past decade the scheme has driven a reduction of over one million kilogrammes of greenhouse emissions in Bristol alone, as well as participation from over 4,000 teams across the country, and reaching nearly 160,000 staff members nationally.
The UNESCO award-winning programme was developed by the University in 2008, in partnership with the National Union of Students, as a practical way of helping staff and students to cut back on their environmental impact.
Over the last 10 years the scheme has been adopted by hundreds of organisations including University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, North Bristol NHS Trust and 50 universities throughout the country.
The Green Impact Awards challenge teams and departments to implement a number of easy and practical green solutions, whether it’s improving recycling, using less water, promoting sustainable travel or reducing waste. The scheme encourages and rewards the efforts of teams and individuals in reducing collective environmental impact.
University of Bristol Head of Sustainability, Martin Wiles said: “The Green Impact Awards are a fantastic testament to how the efforts of individuals and teams can combine to achieve instrumental positive effects on our environment. We’re immensely proud to have created a scheme that has gone on to be adopted across the country and of all of our staff and students whose work has contributed positively on our environment.”
The Green Impact Awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 6th December in the Reception Room of the Wills Memorial Building and will recognise the exceptional efforts of various teams and individuals across the city.
The Life Sciences Building Bristol Team and The Life Sciences Lab Team both came away with awards at this year's ceromony.
We are pleased to announce the following:
