Launched in 2007, the Bristol Institute of Public Affairs (BIPA) has established the University of Bristol as a premier location for research in public affairs and public policy. It hosts a range of high profile research centres that draw together and foster interdisciplinary activities within and beyond the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. The Institute is internationally recognised for world class interdisciplinary research, scholarship and public engagement. It also hosts high quality forums that bring together social scientists, lawyers and a wide range of external stakeholders around issues of international and national concern.

The Centre for Market and Public Organisation, the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship and the Centre for Multi-Level Modelling now find themselves in surroundings that match the high quality of their influential outputs. During the second phase of development the original research centres were joined by three new centres; the Global Insecurities Centre, the Human Rights Implementation Centre and the Townsend Centre for International Poverty Research. These six centres position the University of Bristol and BIPA as a potential world leader in terms of research power and impact.
