Targeted Careers Support for ‘widening participation’ students

Flying Start – opt in to stay informed!

All home undergraduate students who meet one or more of the criteria below are invited to opt in to ‘Flying Start’. They will receive:

  • timely, targeted e-mails with information, opportunities and events relevant to them;
  • an invitation to a termly ‘Flying Start’ event, where they can: find out about interesting opportunities; meet role models, opportunity providers and fellow students; enjoy the food and drink provided. See our events page for more information and to book on to the Autumn and Spring term events.

Our ‘widening participation’ criteria are for students:

  • from an ‘Aspiring School’ - see eligible schools in England (PDF, 1.06MB) or eligible schools in Wales (PDF, 95.2kB);
  • in receipt of a University of Bristol Bursary;
  • from a low participation neighbourhood. Check your address using the POLAR checking tool. The number in the last (POLAR3 young participation quintile) column must be 1 or 2 to qualify.
  • from a minority ethnic group;
  • with a disability (including specific learning disabilities & mental health)
  • mature student (aged 21 or over at the start of your undergraduate study programme).

Career Boost – Four practical workshops in four weeks to help you secure career-related experience

Getting career-related experience, whether that be volunteering, work experience, an internship or your first graduate role, is increasingly important to help you test career ideas out and to progress.

If you feel that you could benefit from some dedicated time and support to make this experience happen for you, Career Boost is here to help. Career Boost is a programme aimed at supporting home Undergraduate students who meet multiple widening participation criteria to have equal opportunities to secure career- related work experience. Through our programme of 4 action-focused workshops once a week you can work with others to:

  • identify goals & opportunities;
  • build confidence & networking skills;
  • make applications & practise interviews;
  • give yourself a boost into your future career
