I know the sort of work I want, how do I find the vacancies?
Start with our job lists. You can search for broad categories like arts, human resources, science etc, here's a list of all the different job types we use. Or you can search for a key word like museum or environment.
Professional associations and journals often carry job adverts. Check out our I want to work in... section for links. Have a look at our employer links too. You can search for specific types of employer. Most will have sent us vacancies in the last year or so.
Still can't find what you're looking for? Come in and see us, information staff and advisers may be able to help you. Current students should have a look at the Careers Network - talk to a Bristol gradudate who's already working in whichever area interests you.
Many newspapers have
searchable jobs databases. Or you could try a specialist
recruitment agency
I want to use my degree subject - how can I find out about related jobs?
A lot easier if you're an engineering student than a philosophy student but about 50% of graduate vacancies are for any degree subject. It's probably about the same for vacation work.
For general ideas see the What do graduates do? pages
Search our vacancy lists for specific degrees too.
Hint: try a few different searches - if you are studying French, try French but do a broader search for
languages too. We also abbreviate some subjects to save
space - Eng will get more results than Engineering or Civil
Engineering
Try one of the big graduate recruitment sites (for vacation work or a longer term job). Some of them are searchable by degree subject. Try our job site links
Still can't find what you're looking for? Come in and see us, information staff and advisers may be able to help you.
How do I get a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check done?
The CRB check is now called the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. There is some good advice about when and how you would get this check done on the GOV.UK website.
If you need to disclose an offence to a postgraduate course or employer you may want to come into the Careers Service for a chat with one of the Careers Advisers about how you can best do this.
For further advice and links see our diversity pages.
When do I start looking?
We've got specific advice for:
- final years
- postgrads
- people looking for vacation work
Generally though, there's no time like the present.
- Make the most of the different fairs and employer presentations, particularly in the autumn term.
- Use the I want to work in... section to read up on different occupation.
- Come to the Careers Service in person to use our books and printed materials. Not everything is online.
- Talk to an adviser and have a look at what we have on file.
- Information staff can help you track down material on more unusual jobs and employers. We haven't got all the answers but we generally know where to start looking.
