What are clinical trials?

Clinical trials are the last stage of testing for newly developed drugs and treatments before they are licensed for use. At this stage, the drugs or treatments have already been through laboratory testing, but they still need to be tested on humans to establish: Is it safe for human beings? Does it have any side effects? Does it work better than treatments currently available? Does it help the people taking it to feel better?
