The National Minimum Wage and JobShop
JobShop only advertises vacancies that pay the higher rate NMW, which was set at £6.08 per hour in October 2011.
Who can get the NMW?
Most 'workers' are entitled to the National Minimum Wage. 'Workers' will have a contract of employment or an obligation to perform work. The contract does not need to be written - it may be an implied or oral contract.
Who is exempt from the NMW?
Some people are not entitled to the NMW, these include:
- Volunteers - offering their time of their own free will. They do not have any form of contract of employment or obligation to perform work.
- Voluntary Workers - have a contract of employment and/or an obligation to perform work. Only charities, voluntary organisations, associated fund raising bodies or statutory bodies can employ Voluntary Workers.
- Students on a work placement - this must form an integral part of a UK based course of study and be no longer than 1 year.
- Work shadowing - where no obligation is made to carry out work.
- Self-employed.
- Workers based outside the UK (incl. Channel Islands & Isle of Man).
- EU Leonardo Da Vinci and Youth in Action programmes.
Unpaid work experience
Gaining work experience can be a vital step towards future employment. In some cases you may feel that unpaid work experience is the best way for you to gain knowledge of the industry sector that interests you. Whilst JobShop urges you to fully understand your right to the National Minimum Wage, you may choose to take an unpaid work experience opportunity.
Please refer to the information within the Work Experience section.
We are currently funding 100 internships a year in Small to Medium Enterprises (SME's are companies with les than 250 staff) and charities. See UoB Internships for details on this.
