Please read on for full details.
1. EXPERIENCE - WORK & LIFE
50 hours of work/life experience are needed to complete the award. This can seem a lot to start with, but most students find that things they are already doing can be counted. The 50 hours can also be spread over your entire time studying at Bristol, and can be formed from a number of different activities.
To achieve the Bristol PLuS Award- Engineering, at least 25 out of the 50 hours experience must be in an engineering role or environment.
Some examples would be:
Internships or placements in an engineering environment
Engineering research project (not credited towards your degree)
Engineering outreach work in schools
Volunteering with Open and Admissions Days in the Faculty
Mentoring students from lower years
You can take part in a very wide range of activity and build up the hours slowly over time, or go for a more intensive, short-term commitment that fits in around your studying.
Experience cannot be something you are required to do as part of your studies, e.g. a year placement in industry/overseas.
You will need to provide the contact details of a referee who can confirm what you have done. They will be contacted once you have submitted your evidence for the award.
2. WORKSHOPS
You need to attend a minimum of 4 workshops.
At least one workshop must be on interview skills.
Please find examples of interview skills workshops below. To view the full list of eligible workshops, please register/log in.
At least one workshop must be on job-market awareness
Please find examples of job-market awareness workshops below. To view the full list of eligible workshops, please register/log in.
The remaining two workshops can be any other employability related workshops that you have attended.
Please note that workshops must be at least 30 minutes long and must not be credit-bearing (i.e. part of your degree).

have been involved in an engineering-related activity
gained employability-related skills e.g. teamwork, communication.
participated in an interactive manner (i.e. not all passive listening)
participated for a minimum of 7 hours
reviewed the skills you have gained from the activity/event e.g. report, review meeting, presentation.
Your intensive skills activity must be engineering related, for example:
Getting Ahead of the Game Employability Day, Engineering Faculty - Careers Service
Engineering Leadership Advanced Award Scheme - Royal Academy of Engineering
Engineering Leadership Standard Award Scheme - Royal Academy of Engineering
Teamwork Challenge Day - Institute of Civil Engineers
UoB Engineering Related Society President
UoB Engineering Related Society Treasurer
UoB Engineering Related Society Committee Member (pre-agreed via Careers Service)
Please note:
Your 'intensive skills activity' cannot be the same as your 'work/life experience'.
You will not be able to use the same activity for the Outstanding Award.
If you have done something that might count as an intensive skills activity please email us at careers-plusaward@bristol.ac.uk and explain how it has allowed you to meet the criteria of the intensive skills activity.
4. REPORT
300 words
We ask you to look back on and review the experiences you are giving as evidence for your Bristol PLuS Award and what you feel you have learnt from them. Reflection is a transferable skill required by employers and you will undoubtedly have to reflect on your experiences when applying for internships and graduate jobs. It is also encouraged through appraisal schemes and through professional development courses.
