Looking for funding for postgraduate study? TARGETcourses have produced a postgraduate funding database that students can use to view the funding opportunities available to them.

The TARGETcourses database allows students to search for funding opportunities based on individuals intended institution(s) or region of origin so that only relevant results are returned.

Are you a social science student? HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) have produced a guide encouraging you to use quantitative methods in your career.

Social science by numbers: careers with quantitative methods includes ideas for potential areas of work and employers in the following areas:

  • research
  • applied analysis of data and statistics
  • advisory and consultancy work
  • education

It also overviews myths and truths about careers with quantitative methods and provides case studies and useful links.

Reference copies are available in folders O3 and 1c in the Careers Service.

The lesbian, gay and bisexual charity Stonewall has published the latest edition of its annual Workplace Equality Index. This booklet lists the top 100 gay-friendly employers in the UK. A copy can be downloaded in PDF format from Stonewall's website, and a reference copy is available at classmark 3e in the Careers Service resource.

Each year, the Careers Service hosts a series of lunchtime careers talks for researchers. These sessions focus on the transition from research to non-academic careers, and they have proven popular with postgraduate students and research staff alike. MP3 recordings of these sessions are made available - along with the relevant Powerpoint slides - on our Careers Downloads page. Seventeen recordings are currently available.

The University of Bristol Careers Service has subscribed to the Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding coverAlternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding 2011-12, which all current Bristol students and registered recent Bristol graduates can access and download as a PDF file.

The guide, published by GradFunding, details how to find and apply to alternative sources of funding - especially charities - which make awards to current and prospective graduate students. Charities are an underrated funding resource, and often make awards to students of any subject and any nationality.

A limited number of copies of the Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding 2011-12 are also available on CD-ROM. The discs are priced at £1.50 each, limited to one disc per user, and are available to purchase from the Careers Service Welcome Desk.

Ace Your Case WetFeet Insider Guide Beat the Street WetFeet Insider Guide

The WetFeet database has been updated and now includes 50 insider guides [downloadable e-books available as PDFs] on a variety of topics ranging from specialist 'Ace your case' guides for management consultancy interviews and 'Beat the street' guides for investment banking interviews through to guides about specific industries and employers.

On Monday 22 August the Careers Service opened in its new accommodation at 5 Tyndall Avenue in the former Waterstone's bookshop adjacent to the Computer Centre - building 41 on the University Precinct Map. Please pop in to browse the printed materials on the open shelves, both reference only materials and free publications, as well as access electronic resources via the eight student PCs.

Looking for employers with a focus on equality and diversity? We now have the latest edition of the Equality Britain: directory of opportunity in the Careers Service. Available on the shelf at 3a for reference use.

Since 2002, Equality Britain has been working to promote equality and diversity within employment, housing, education and adoption & fostering. Their annual directory is organised by UK region. It lists organisations who want to work with people regardless of: age; race; gender; belief; disability; sexuality or transgender status.

Interested in companies in the South West? South West Top 500 Companies is a CD-ROM available from the Resources Help Desk that provides details of the South West region's Top 500 Companies. The rankings, published by Insider, were obtained by measuring the performance of companies by a combination of their turnover and profitability. Company details, presented in Microsoft Excel format, include contact names and email addresses for key contacts. See our How to research employers website for further information.
