Bath TAPS 2014
PhD students participated in the Bath TAPS into Science festival held on the 19-23 March 2014.
Friday 21st March saw postgraduate students in the Centre engaging key stage 2 & 3 (Years 6-9) schoolchildren in engineering ideas at the Bath TAPS 2014 (PDF, 482kB) school day. The event, held at the University of Bath, and involved researchers from all the local universities (Bath, Bristol and UWE) but were the only representatives from Bristol Engineering.
More than 1,600 children from local schools and several schools from Spain had the opportunity to learn about what fun engineering can be. Some exhibits gave them the chance to get messy with science but the CDT stand encouraged them to learn about communications technology with the opportunity to make cup phones, to learn about mobile phone network planning via an interactive game and to consider how technology has developed in phones to make them smaller, lighter and more energy efficient.
The CDT postgraduate students will be taking the outreach activities in to local schools.
Colston Collegiate School Visit - February 2014
On Thursday 27th February a number of Year 10 and Year 12 students visited the Centre and had the chance to meet with PhD students and leading academics in this exciting field. During the visit they learnt about the varied academic background of the postgraduate students and chatted about career opportunities and gained some excellent advice that will be invaluable when planning future careers. They were also shown a number of past and current projects being undertaken in the Lab and shown the anechoic chamber together with details of how this is used to study the performance of radio antennas without issues of interference eg for an aerodynamic antenna for a Formula 1 team, allowing the engineering team in the pits to communicate with their drivers whilst moving at hundreds of miles an hour. Colston students also learnt that there is more to a university course than meets the eye. For example in electrical engineering research often overlaps with other areas of science and engineering. eg. the neural circuits developed using a combination of medical and electrical engineering that had allowed them to improve their understanding of neuron functions.
The visiting students provided valuable assistance to the PhD students by testing and giving feedback on tone mobile phone networking planning activity that had been devised for Bath TAPS 2014.
