Profile

Ying is an independent consultant and researcher, specialising in urban regeneration and planning. Her current academic research project is assisting Professor Jeffrey Henderson’s Leverhulme Trust project China and the future of the developing world: Danger and opportunity in a global-Asian era. She was awarded a Post-doctoral Research Fellowship by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and ODPM (currently Department for Communities and Local Government) 2002-2005. The theme of the research programme was Sustainable partnerships: Towards a framework for effectiveness and inclusion. Her work is archived by the ESRC website

Previous research projects included a collaboration with Tongji University on Public participation in the urban planning process in China: A case study of Shanghai, funded by the British Council and the Department for International Development (DfID).

Ying taught at the Department of Civic Design (Town and Regional Planning), University of Liverpool and the School of the Built Environment, Leeds Metropolitan University for many years. She was the co-editor of the International Development Planning Review (2002-2006). Prior to her academic career she had extensive practice experience in the public and voluntary sectors in Britain and East Asia.
