Letter from the Vice-Chancellor

The University of Bristol does not define its people. It is the people – students, academics, alumni – who define Bristol.
Roger Holmes (BSc 1981)
Managing Director, Change Capital Partners and former CEO, Marks & Spencer

From the Vice-Chancellor

Professor Eric Thomas, Vice-Chancellor

Dear Friend of Bristol,

Roger Holmes is right: the essence of Bristol University is its people. Our students and our staff are renowned for their talent and independent thinking, and it is our job to help them fulfil their promise. We want to give them inspiration, encourage them to innovate and – just as importantly – to engage with the wider world.

In practical terms this means new buildings and new equipment, as well as recruiting the best staff in an ever more competitive, international academic environment. It also means attracting, and supporting, the brightest students, whatever their social or financial background. These are the ambitions of Bristol’s Centenary Campaign.

Our target is to raise £100 million by the end of 2014. This is a serious sum for a small university, but it is a target we must aspire to and one that, with the support of alumni and friends like you, we can achieve.

I hope you find our aims inspiring, innovative and engaging, and that you will consider supporting the Centenary Campaign.
