Naming Fellows

The Institute is the most exciting new venture in Classics in decades. It is committed to a broad vision of the subject, linking ancient and modern worlds together. It has the potential to be one of the world’s great research institutes.
Bob Fowler
Dean, Faculty of Arts & Henry Overton Wills Professor of Greek

Renowned for its progressive approach, the Institute illuminates our perception of the world today by ensuring that the nature of our debt to the Classical world is properly understood.

Importance

The Institute serves as a life-force for scholarship in the 21st century, and is committed to nurturing world-class young scholars to investigate and invigorate the significance of ancient Greece and Rome in a modern context.

Without the Roman Empire we would not have the European Community or the United Nations; without Greece we would not have democracy or Western traditions of rationality in science and philosophy. If we do not understand our past, we will fail in our duty to the future.

In order to cultivate the best young scholars in this field we need to put the Institute on a firm financial footing. Through providing a vibrant intellectual environment for world-class postdoctoral fellows and PhD students, we in Bristol will continue to expand contemporary understanding of the contribution of the past to the essential elements of modern life.

Impact

To appreciate our modern cultural identity, we must trace its journey from antiquity.

Since its opening in 2000 the Institute has already achieved a prominent place in international scholarship. With additional funding, Bristol can further expand its impact on contemporary understanding of the contribution of the past to modern life.

Goal

The Institute requires an endowment to ensure that two Postdoctoral Fellows can always be in post and that its other core activities are covered. £2 million will enable us to accomplish this.

If this goal is not achieved, one of the Institute’s most important activities (the nurturing of world-class young scholars) will be endangered.
