The Mobile Teaching Unit has been out and about visiting hundreds of young people across the UK.November
1st – Year 5 pupils at Redland High School for Girls welcomed Lauren Hughes and Kimberley Healey for an afternoon of science experiments and demonstrations in their activity hall. The girls enjoyed finding out how big their lungs were and asking questions about their bodies.
9th – 40 Year 10 students from Commonweal School in Swindon visited the Physiology laboratories for the afternoon and participated in workshops on electrocardiography and respiratory physiology as part of their GCSE studies.
10th – The Mobile Teaching Unit returned to Cheltenham to teach students at Dean Close School. During the day around 100 students attended sessions on the ‘Respiratory System’ and ‘Beating and Breathing’.
16th – Kennet School in Thatcham, Berkshire had a repeat visit from the Mobile Teaching Unit. Throughout the day students from Years 11 to 13 participated in hands-on activities and students from Trinity School, Newbury also visited for one of the sessions.
18th – As part of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital’s annual career day for school students interested in healthcare, the Mobile Teaching Unit ran 6 ‘Beating and Breathing’ sessions to link the science of healthcare with the practical skills that the students also learnt during the day.
23rd – Spalding High School, Lincolnshire was the second lucky recipient of the Physiological Society prize to win a visit from the Mobile Teaching Unit. As well as the normal teaching sessions, students also received help with their coursework studies by attending a short talk on cystic fibrosis given by Dr. Lauren Hughes.
December
1st – The Physiology laboratory and teaching staff welcomed 50 students attending the Access to Bristol course run by the Widening Participation Office. As well as those interested in a medical related career, students in the natural sciences also attended to participate in laboratory, simulation and virtual microscope sessions.
7th – The Mobile Teaching Unit visited The Latymer School, London for its fourth visit to teach Year 12 students about lung function test and electrocardiography. All the students enjoyed the day and participated fully in the experiments.
