The second Zutshi-Smith memorial lecture is on the topic of religious toleration. Our lecturer, Professor the Lord Parekh will be speaking on ‘A Comparative Perspective on Religious Toleration’. Lord Parekh will consider the place of religious toleration in different religious traditions, and what religions can offer to the creation and maintenance of traditions of toleration. A distinguished panel of experts will respond to his lecture before the floor is opened to question and comment. The evening will close with a drinks reception in the conference foyer.

*Update - the Chaplaincy Centre hosted a sumptous feast provided by J-Soc (the Jewish Society), the Hindu Society, Christian Connexions, various Buddhist groups, the Christian Union and the Chaplaincy. More than 40 students, staff and guests shared in food and conversation. We also celebrated our successful bid to the Alumni Foundation for a grant to improve our Multifaith Library. (Further details of this grant and the books to be purchased will be posted soon.) The Food Swap was an overwhelming successful event which all agreed should happened more regularly!

‘Finance as if people and the ecosystem mattered’

Fellow of the New Economics Foundation and co-founder of the Jubilee 2000 campaign
Ann Pettifor is an economist and campaigner. She is both a fellow of the New Economics Foundation (nef) and Director of Advocacy International. She was leader of the Jubilee 2000 campaign against Third World debt, and as early as 2003 was one of the lone voices predicting the coming First World debt crisis. More recently she has worked with nef to publish papers warning of the threat posed by the 'triple crunch' of debt, climate change and peak oil, and proposed policies to work towards a more sustainable financial and ecological future. At the annual Green Impact Awards ceremony, Rachael Fletcher (Free Church Chaplain) received on behalf of all the Multifaith Chaplaincy Team, a Bronze Plus Award (made from recycled plastic, of course!) from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor David Clarke. Christmas: What's your story? Just as each carol and Christmas card tells a different version of the Christmas story, so we have different versions of our own story to tell. All are invited to a traditional celebration with carols, readings and prayers, that help us to make links between the Christmas story and our own. There will also be 400 mince pies: please come and help us eat them!
